When more training stops producing faster races, carbohydrate availability and total energy intake deserve the same scrutiny as the schedule.

When mileage rises and race times do not move, runners usually add another workout. Sometimes the missing stimulus is not training. It is enough energy to complete, recover from, and adapt to the training already on the calendar.

This is not an argument for eating gels during every jog. It is an audit: are the important sessions supplied well enough to produce the quality you planned?

Your weekly mileage is not the full load

A 50-mile (80 km) week can be manageable with good sleep and regular meals. The same week can become a chronic deficit when it sits beside work deadlines, skipped breakfasts, and long runs started with only coffee.

Three common mistakes

Saving race fueling for race day. The gastrointestinal system needs practice under movement and intensity.

More training works only when you can absorb it. Before adding volume, make sure the current work is genuinely funded.
